Teeth Cleaning Aftercare Tips

Nov 27 2021

Going to the dentist and getting a professional dental cleaning not only feels great, but also is necessary for maintaining good oral health. You should schedule your dental cleanings at least once every six months to keep your pearly whites healthy. In addition to regular dental cleanings, though, you should practice good oral hygiene between visits. It’s also important to know how to care for your teeth following your professional teeth cleaning. Here are some tips to help—

How to Care for Your Teeth After a Dental Cleaning:

After your dental cleaning, be sure to practice good dental hygiene! Here’s how you should be caring for your teeth after a dental cleaning:

  • Brush regularly. Brushing regularly is a foundational piece of good oral hygiene. Regular brushing means brushing teeth at least twice per day—once in the morning and once before bed. However, brushing after all meals is even better!
  • Floss daily. Flossing is something you should add to your daily routine. Flossing helps to keep the spaces in between your teeth clean and free of plaque and food particles. Floss after brushing, and be sure to rinse after flossing.
  • Pay attention to sensitivity. Right after your dental cleaning, you may notice some sensitivity. This is normal. If you’re experiencing sensitivity, avoid hot and cold foods and choose foods that are easy to eat and are soft, such as soups and smoothies.
  • Rinse with saltwater. Something that can help with sensitivity after a dental cleaning is simply rinsing your mouth with saltwater. Choose room temperature water, swish for 10-12  seconds, and then spit. Doing this twice a day can provide relief and help to kill bacteria.
  • Schedule future visits. As mentioned above, regular dental cleanings are crucial to your oral health. You should get another cleaning on the schedule about six months from the date of your original appointment or more frequently if it is recommended by your dental professional.

Why Dental Care Is So Important

By scheduling regular cleaning and brushing and flossing between sessions, you can help to stave off cavities, gingivitis, gum disease, and tooth decay. If you don’t regularly see a dentist, you may be increasing your risk of oral health complications.
