Do I Really Need a Teeth Cleaning Every 6 Months?

Nov 30 2021

You’ve probably heard that scheduling regular dental cleanings and check-ups is important, and that you should be scheduling these cleanings about once every six months. However, you may be wondering whether or not a cleaning every six months is really necessary, especially if you’re someone who practices good oral hygiene. Here’s what you should know about what to expect during a dental cleaning and why seeing your dentist for a cleaning twice a year is recommended—

What Happens During a Teeth Cleaning?

During a standard dental cleaning, your dentist will do the following:

  • Physical exam. The first thing that your dentist will do is to perform a physical examination of your teeth to check for inflammation of the gums, signs of cavities, and damage to the teeth. This is also a time where your dentist can identify where plaque builds up and areas that need extra attention.
  • Plaque and tartar removal. The next part of the dental cleaning will be the professional removal of plaque and tartar. If you brush and floss regularly, there will be less tartar to remove, but you cannot remove all built-up tartar on your teeth above the gumline and none below the gumline… only a dental professional can do these jobs fully using special instruments to safely remove bacteria laden tartar.
  • Toothpaste cleaning and flossing. Next, get ready for a professional brushing using a gritty toothpaste that helps to polish teeth and remove any remaining plaque and tartar. Then, you’ll get a professional flossing treatment.
  • Optional fluoride treatment. Today, most dentists offer fluoride as an optional part of the dental cleaning process. If you have questions about fluoride and whether it’s necessary, talk to your dentist directly.

Why Are Teeth Cleanings So Important?

Teeth cleanings are important because they help to stave off gum disease, inflammation of the gums, bacterial infections, and cavities—all of which can lead to serious health complications, including weakened teeth and even tooth loss in some cases. The dental professional will also look at all soft tissues in the mouth to assure there are no abnormalities in these tissues.

Do I Really Need a Teeth Cleaning Every Six Months?

While it may seem unnecessary, seeing the dentist twice a year is what’s recommended by the American Dental Association (ADA). Regular cleanings are the best way to keep your teeth and mouth healthy. If you miss an appointment, it’s probably not a big deal, but it could be, so reschedule as close as possible to the date of your missed appointment.
