What Is a Dental Implant?

Aug 16 2022

Suffering from missing or badly damaged teeth can be embarrassing. While smiling is a great way to tell the world how you’re feeling, you may be ashamed of your smile and hesitant to eat or speak around others due to your teeth. At Distinctive Dental Solutions, we know what you’re going through and we want you to know that there are solutions available! One treatment option for badly damaged or missing teeth is dental implants. Here’s what you should know about dental implants—

Understanding Dental Implants

A dental implant surgery is a procedure that replaces the root of a tooth with a metal, screw-like post to which a fake tooth can be secured. Dental implants look and feel like real teeth! They are designed to match surrounding teeth and look natural.

Why Are Dental Implants Used?

Dental implants are used when a person has missing teeth or when an existing tooth is so badly damaged that it cannot be saved or used to place a dental crown on. Dental implants may be right for you if you have one or more missing teeth, have a fully grown jawbone, have good jawbone and oral tissue health, and are not a good candidate for other tooth replacement options, such as a dental bridge or dentures.

The Dental Implant Process

A dental implant surgery is a process that is performed in multiple steps and can take many months from start to finish. The process begins with removing the damaged tooth and tooth root to make way for the implant. Next, the jawbone will be prepared for surgery. The next stage is the placement of the dental implant.

After the dental implant is placed, bone growth and healing around the implant must occur, which can take multiple weeks or months. Once healing is complete, you will return to the dentist for the placement of the abutment and then, finally, the placement of the artificial tooth.
