A general cleaning typically involves the following: 

• Physical Exam. A hygienist will check for signs of gingivitis using a small mirror. If we notice anything, we’ll call over our lead dentist, Dr. Bologna, to check before proceeding. 
• Plaque and Tartar Removal. We use a scaler to scrape off plaque and tartar from your teeth. No matter how well you brush, you should expect some plaque buildup, which is why visiting a dentist is important. Tartar, or hardened plaque, can only be removed by a dentist. Brushing and flossing more often can mitigate buildup. 
• Professional Toothpaste Cleaning. For the next step, we’ll cover your teeth in gritty toothpaste and polish them. This removes any tartar left behind after the scaling process. 
• Flossing. Nothing compares to an expert flossing. Flossing helps us spot any troublesome areas in the gums.  
• Fluoride Treatment. The final step of your cleaning is the fluoride treatment. We’ll fill a mouthpiece with the treatment, which is a soft foam-like substance. We’ll place it in your mouth for about a minute or so.

We may also take X-rays, which are typically done once a year. We may also recommend that your child get a molar sealant to help mitigate cavities in hard-to-reach areas.
